Jasper is an opaque, microcrystalline version of quartz. Its appearance is dense, clustered, pitted, stalactite. In addition to silicon dioxide, it contains up to 20% organic substances and mineral oxides, which determine its chemical and physical properties, for example: its color, pattern and appearance. Single-colored jasper is rare, usually it has a multicolored, variegated, patterned, striped surface. Its characteristic colors are red, red, green, yellow, brown and sometimes blue. Jasper rarely occurs alone, it usually forms a mineral association with agate and opal. It can be found all over the world. In Hungary, you can find very nice specimens in Gyöngyösoroszi.

Description

Obsidian is a natural glass produced by the rapid cooling of hot silicic lava. It is also called volcanic glass or volcano glass. It has an amorphous structure, because the crystalline structure does not form due to rapid cooling. Its fracture is shell-like, it has a sharp fracture surface, and it is easy to work. We distinguish several types, which differ from each other in the conditions of their formation and their impurities: mahogany obsidian, smoke obsidian (Apacha's tear), gold obsidian, silver obsidian, rainbow obsidian, snowflake obsidian, black obsidian.

AQUAMARINE

Origin of name

The name aquamarine comes from the Latin word for sea water, "aqua" = water and "mare" = sea. Their name refers to the fact that it has the same color as the sea.

Description

Aquamarine belongs to the beryl group, other members of the group are emerald and beryl. Silicate mineral, its crystals are hexagonal columns. The members of the beryl group are allochromic (foreign-colored) minerals, that is, their color is determined by the foreign chemical element incorporated into the crystal structure. Aquamarine gets its color from incorporated iron. There are also very large specimens, but these are usually not of gem quality.

History

The name aquamarine was already used in the Middle Ages. In the 19th century, the teal version was the most popular, today the bluer the more valuable. Madagascar was the largest source of aquamarine, but has now lost its importance. The most productive deposit today is Brazil. In 1910, the largest aquamarine of 110 kg was found in Brazil, and 200,000 carats of precious stones were made from it.

It is considered a lucky stone for sailors and those who travel by water. XVII. century, it was used to determine the future. According to an old legend, whoever has aquamarine will keep their youth and happiness forever.

QUARTZ
QUARTZ

Origin of name

The name of rock crystal comes from the Greek word "krystallos", meaning "ice". The ancient Greeks considered the mineral to be eternally frozen, unmeltable ice.

Description

Rock crystal is the colorless, purest version of quartz. It can be found all over the world in the most diverse geological environments, in association with many minerals. It almost always forms a twin crystal. The size of rock crystals can range from a few millimeters to several meters. As a result of radioactive radiation, it becomes smoky and brownish. The rainbow-like optical effect of iris quartz or rainbow quartz is caused by the light phenomena created by the parallel cracks formed as a result of the rock crystal being heated and then quickly cooled. Milky quartz is an almost opaque version of rock crystal containing large amounts of tiny liquid inclusions. The rutile quartz, also known as "Venus hair", is a golden version of rock crystal containing rutile fibers. Mossy quartz contains greenish leaf- and branch-like inclusions.
